#My zutara anastasia au

I'm thinking about an Anastasia AU plot for Zutara. I can't decide who I want to be in the Anastasia role. My instinct is Zuko, for obvious reasons, but I also like the idea of Katara as Anastasia and Zuko as Dimitri. Although, if I'm honest, it's less that I like Katara as Anastasia (but that would absolutely work), and more that I love the idea of Iroh as Vladimir. If I have Zuko as Anastasia, then Iroh would have to be Dowager Empress Maria, obviously. Don't get me wrong, some hilarious things could happen with Sokka in Vladimir's role, but Iroh and Vladimir are such perfect parallels.

Anyway, I'm probably never going to write this fic. It's just fun to imagine. What do you think? Would you rather have the version of this story where Zuko is Anastasia? Or would you rather have Iroh as Vladimir?

M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with?  Did it turn into a story?

Oh my goodness, for sure there have been some crazy ideas at a time, but I'll need a minute for this one. I do remember thinking of a Zutara: The Lion King AU, with the banished cocky, insecure prince and all, as well as a Hiccstrid: Anastasia AU (not so weird, really). Neither turned into a fic, although i did rephrase the "Rumour in St. Petersburg" into a "Rumour on the Isle of Berk" song, or at least bits of it (quite successfully, may i add). I blame @astridthevalkyrie and @wilderwestqueen for the last one.

also obviously virtually everything can be turned into an MLB au. just saying.

R: Which writers (fanfic or otherwise) do you consider the biggest influence on you and your writing?

I feel like i've been answering this question since the first ask I ever posted, but when it comes to fanfic, it will always be @cried2dream, as she is the one who personally and single-handedly dragged me into writing fanfic in the first place (with her own great writing, of course).

Fanfiction aside, I do pick up a style of writing pretty easily (if imperfectly), and so here it would mostly be L.M. Mongomery, Jane Austen and Andrzej Sapkowski (yes, the Witcher guy).

But also I will never not talk about Fyodor Dostoevsky and Boleslaw Prus, so I'm dragging them into this as well because I can.

And Tolkien. Of course there must be Tolkien.

I’ve been on a big zutara fic reading binge, but one I haven’t read is a Anastasia AU (so I did my own doodle LOL) does anyone know if there is a zutara/Anastasia AU? I think it would work with either katara or zuko as Anastasia.

Hi! I’m so sorry I haven’t been on here in a while. I was avoiding Carmen Sandiego spoilers and long story short, it took a month longer than I hoped to watch Season 4 with my friend who’s busy with work. Anyway, I’m back, and I’ve seen your last ask, so I will reply to it soon :)

I’m so honoured you miss my writing. It’s stalled a lot - either original or fanfic - recently. So this has been good practice. Thank you!

Chaos.

There was only chaos.

Iroh heard it all. They burst through the gates. Beheaded Lu Ten’s statue. Growled their rage.

Fear made it hard to breathe. But he had to keep his head.

Soon, he’d be safe. He and Zuko and Ursa and everyone he could find would be safe. The White Lotus was on its way. Piandao would take them to a secret location outside Caldera where they could disappear. Never to be seen again.

At least, that was the plan.

Iroh hadn’t planned for Zuko to run away.

“My music box!”

Iroh reached for Zuko. For his arm, for his hand. Anything. But it was too late.

“Zuko! Come back! Come back!”

Iroh pushed through the crowd. Past servants. Past sobbing nobles and terrified governors. He ran after his nephew. Feet pounding against the carpeted floor. Down a few hallways. Up a staircase. Agni! How was this boy so fast?

“Zuko!”

“I won’t be long, Uncle!”

Too late for that. Iroh watched as Zuko disappeared in his bedroom. Iroh followed after him. He closed the doors behind him. Outside Zuko’s bedroom windows, fire burned bright. Turning the sky to a scorching orange. Quick, quick! They had to leave! But Zuko was still hunched over a diorama of the Palace gardens he’d been building for the past few weeks. His pride and joy.

Zuko picked up his music box. Left next to the miniature turtleduck pond.

“Zuko!”

“I got it! Where are we...?”

Zuko never had the time to finish.

Boom!

The ground shook.

An explosion.

Somewhere in the Palace.

They were here. They were coming.

And they - Zuko and Iroh - were trapped.

“Come on, we have to get out of here! Now!”

Iroh grabbed onto Zuko, pushing him towards another door - Zuko’s bathroom door. Maybe then, they’d be able to hide without...!

“No, not that way!”

Iroh froze. One hand curled with an iron grip around Zuko’s shoulder. He spun around. Who - what - why...? That was when his gaze landed on her.

A servant girl.

A servant girl he knew. Yes! He knew her! He’d talked to her more than once. In other circumstances, he might have sat down with her around a cup of tea while she ranted about her brother or the older staff members or Azula’s cruel “pranks”.

But now, these were not those circumstances.

They were in danger. Their lives were at risk.

And hope came in the form of a kitchen girl named Katara.

Katara had appeared from a... well, from a panel in the wall. A small door. Of course! Secret passageways ran through the entire Palace. Katara ran up to them. With surprising strength, she pushed them forward. Towards the door in the wall.

“Come this way! Through the servants’ quarters!”

Iroh barely heard something hit the floor. He pushed Zuko in through the passageway as Katara pushed him forward.

And Zuko escaped from Iroh’s grip. As always. And as always, he tried to run back inside his room. To find...

“My music box!”

“Oh, no, you’re not, Your Highness!”

Katara blocked his way. With all the might of an eleven-year-old.

“Go! Go back! Leave!”

She pushed Zuko in through the door in the wall once more. As she closed the panel, light vanished. Iroh and Zuko remained next to the panel for one second too long. Standing in the stuffy, dusty air.

Then, Iroh heard the doors burst open.

“Come on, hurry!” he hissed.

He grabbed Zuko’s arm once more. This time, Zuko followed. Mutely. Looking devastated. But there was no time to waste. Iroh pushed him forward. Through the passageways. Through the Palace. Towards safety.

He only hoped Katara would be all right.

Titles suck, but I usually get them from quotes, songs, lines from the fic, or I get quirky with references.  Really, it’s a little bit of everything!

Do you outline?

The only fic I have ever properly outlined is Things I Almost Remembered, which is still a wip.  That outline was written on a 5 hour plane ride while I was amped up on 3-4 coffees and two rum-and-cokes.  I’m still using it.  Otherwise, no outlines, we write from the heart in this house

You get a dog picture, a duo widget, and a snippet from my zutara Anastasia au rough draft:

Her consciousness is faint, and what she can make out is hazy. Her clothes are plastered to her skin, and she is shaking, cold, hungry, and dehydrated.

A hand rests a glass of water on her cracked lips, tilting it forward so it washes down her throat.

“She doesn’t remember anything?”

“Pushing her will only worsen her condition. She’s clearly been through something terrible.”

Silence.

“She is Kyoshi now.”

The girl grips at a pendant, the carved lines digging into her palm.

“Katara,” she coughs, voice gravelly. “My name is Katara.”

Top 10 movies from any genre/decade you can watch and think, "yup that's a Zutara AU right there"

This is...not as easy as I thought. I like movies, but not a lot of the movies I like lend themselves to Zutara AUs, strangely enough. I could go back to Eve's Bayou or The First Wives Club over and over, but you could see how I can't really make an AU out of those, right? Like the best fit for Zutara in that movie would be Brenda and Morty, and I can't do that to either of them. And there is sex in Eve's Bayou, but not romance. Also, most of the viable men to build an AU around end up dead. I like to use tropes and archetypes when I'm making up stories for these two more so than actual movie plots, but let me see what I can come up with.

In no particular order:

1. Brown Sugar (and honestly, it's mostly because I want that restaurant scene as a Maiko break up)

2. My Best Friend's Wedding (I haven't decided yet if Katara is the Kimmy character, and Jin is the Julie, or if Zuko is the Kimmy and Haru is the Julie. Either way, Toph is the George).

3. Pride and Prejudice (this one speaks for itself. And yes, I do mean the Keira Knightly version)

4. The Mummy (damagectrl did an amazing take on this idea in A Drop in the Desert. Mine would be closer to the Brendan Fraser movie, though. )

5. Just Like Heaven (I just think Zuko would be absolutely perfect as a put upon Mark Ruffalo type dealing with a pissed off ghost Katara)

6. Maid in Manhattan (I'm a sucker for a good Cinderella story. Speaking of which...)

7. Brandy and Whitney Houston's Cinderella (the trouble with musicals is that it's difficult to capture the magic of one in writing. Most of the things that I love about this movie I can't put into a fic, bu~ut the character dynamics I can. And I love the idea of Lt. Jee as Lionel.)

8. Father of the Bride (Hakoda would be the Steve Martin character, obvi. Bonus! Kya is alive in this scenario!)

9. Roman Holiday (not really a romance, but it could be with a few tweaks. Also, Katara would be the reporter and Zuko is obviously the prince.)

10. How to Marry a Millionaire (this idea has been floating around my head for a while, and bizarrely, I think it works for Katara and Zuko. Katara would be the Schatze and Zuko would be the Tom.)

Bonus Entry: Anastasia. This is another one where I'm not sure if Zuko or Katara should be in the Anastasia role, and it largely comes down to Iroh. I think Iroh would make an incredible Vlad character, but I could also see him in the dowager empress' role. If Zuko is the Anastasia, there wouldn't really be a Vlad because both Katara and Sokka would have all the sass of Dimitri.

Hey i'd read anything you'd write! I'm not super familiar with anastasia but i love new dream and I love your writing so if u ended up writing it I would definitely read it. Also side note bc my brain came up with this: what are your thoughts on a tangled atla au? This could go either way meaning it could be atla characters in a tangled scenario or tangled characters in an atla scenario. And remember you arent writing 4 anyone so if u wanna write the anastasia thing go for it! -💙

Aaaah thank you!!! OoooOOh the Don Bluth movie is really fun and it’s one of my favorites from when I was little. It’s not at all historically accurate but I love it anyway. 

I’ve seen the latter a few times browsing around the tag and I think they’re pretty fun :). Who can bend what element varies from person to person, but from what I’ve seen a lot of people have Adira as an Airbender and it fits her very well (also almost everyone has Varian as a nonbender and that is very cool of them)

I also want to say I’ve seen a few atla gang in a tangled setting years ago, and I think I’ve seen one recently of a Zutara/Tangled AU and that’s *chefs kiss* top tier
